Kinder through Seventh graders at Extera Public Schools have been hard at work preparing the 3rd Annual Boyle Heights History Hike, which takes place on Saturday, June 18. This walking cultural event, which is open to the entire community, celebrates the history, art, and culture of the historic neighborhood of Boyle Heights, and will begin at 9:00am in Mariachi Plaza with a Zumba warm-up. Then, student-led groups will embark on a walking tour of the neighborhood, stopping at notable community sites that are significant to the area’s history.
“Extera students will be turning each site into a living museum featuring student-created artworks that explore themes of local history and community,” says David Rodriguez, one of the teachers responsible for the creation of this event. “Our students have been involved in an Extera-created curriculum encompassing local history, event planning, and art in conjunction with local artists, local business leaders”
The planned route will begin and end at Mariachi Plaza.
This event is free and open to the public. To learn more, visit the student-created event website at www.boyleheightshike.wix.com/boyleheightshh
